The untimely death of the broadcaster Charlie Gillett — “Mr World Music” — has left a hole. But if we are going to miss his annual pre-Womad compilation, Simon Broughton’s magazine goes some way to filling the gap. While Latin America is under-represented in the poll, Lusophiles will be glad to see the Cape Verdean diva Lura and the quirky fado-and-beyond newcomers Deolinda. Is the debut album by the disabled Congolese band Staff Benda Bilili really as interesting as the inspiring streets-of-Kinshasa back story? I’m not sure. Still, fascinating work from Faiz Ali Faiz, Mamer and the Ethio-dub project Invisible System, to name a few, should keep you occupied while you mull that one over. Songlines SPLCD003
